I’m lacing up for the Dash for Dysphagia this year — and I’d love for you to support me! This event raises critical awareness about swallowing disorders and helps fuel the research and innovation needed to improve lives.
As a swallow specialized speech pathologist, I work with a lot of patients who have decreased ability to swallow. This can present as coughing while eating and drinking, feeling food stick in their throats, recurrent aspiration pneumonia, needing to avoid certain consistencies of food, and more. What my patients are consistently concerned about is the social and emotional impact of their dysphagia. So many events and gatherings center around food. People show love by providing food and drinks for other people. For some, family meals are when they connect with various loved ones. When your swallowing is not working for you, no matter how severe, it can be very isolating. Dysphagia negatively affects physical health, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life. Please consider supporting me in this year's Dash for Dysphagia!
