In 2005 a group of LoDa, Lower Dauphin Street, service industry employees along with downtown Mobile regulars and residents were having a pint. Yes, this story begins with Beer and ends with Rum. We decided that Mobile needed a new Mardi Gras organization composed of the people who truly host tourists. Originally, the group was to be limited to Service Industry, Residents and Hardcore Regulars of Downtown Mobile. We discussed, drunkenly, this idea for a couple years. Finally in 2007, after settling on a name, Dauphin Street D.R.U.N.K.S. (Dauphin Regular United Naughty Knights of Service), we planned our first Pub Crawl. The date chosen was 2 weeks prior to Fat Tuesday, a night that had no Parades or Balls but was in the Heart of Carnival Season. After many more pints it was decided that we would dress as Pirates (Alcohol + Port City + Scoundrels= Pirates). So on Feb. 6, 2007 a small band of Pirates, led by Captain K.P. (Kevin Painter), embarked on a Peg-Legged Pub Crawl to all Establishments serving Alcohol in Downtown.
In 2009, we were visited by a man from Wragg Swamp, Chief Slacabamorinico. The Chief invited us to attend his annual celebration the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, The Joe Cain Procession, the “People’s Parade”. The Pirates have partaken in this festivity ever since!!
Along the way our crew has shared their hearts and gold with the Port City we call home. Whenever we can support the fine townsfolk, whether it’s a little shanty or buckets of fun, we will throw our might and weight to help. Our efforts have saved Ta-tas, found homes for furry friends and combated that ugly C word through many a stewing. We also endeavor to share the history and stories of our Pirate Brethren.
