Why doesn’t sarcoma have a cure?

When diagnosed with sarcoma, everyone gets the same chemotherapy protocol. Regardless of your subtype, they try the MAP chemotherapy protocol which was initiated in 1980 (over 40 years ago). Some people are lucky, but others are not. There is a 50/50 chance that treatment works. When it doesn’t, you try second and even third line chemotherapy regimens all while undergoing major surgeries to remove tumor growth and metastasis. When second or third line drugs don’t work, your medical team has to come up with a combination of drugs to try that have been used to treat other cancers and hope for the best.
Why is this the process for almost all sarcoma patients? Why is there so little funding and research available for this community? Why is sarcoma almost always misdiagnosed? Why haven’t researchers figured out how or why people get sarcoma? Why is there so little support and limited education provided to medical teams about this cancer subtype?
As a sarcoma patient caregiver these are the questions that fuel me to raise awareness and advocate for better treatment options. Because nobody should be told that their cancer has no cure. There hasn’t even been a change in first line treatment options in my lifetime. Every sarcoma patient, family, and caregiver deserves more than just hope, we deserve a cure.
So join me and my team virtually to support the Race to Cure Sarcoma and help raise money so the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) can continue to fund sarcoma research grants. SFA has contributed $26 million+ in additional funding, 10+ clinical trials with 5 additional pending, and 2 patents. Your donation is an investment in saving lives and creating a world where putting an end to EVERY cancer is a priority.
