Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!
I am a two-time breast cancer survivor and Hollings Cancer Center researcher. My fight against cancer is deeply personal—not only because of my own experiences, but also because of the impact cancer has had on my family.
My family experiences continue to inspire my work in cancer research and my leadership of the Hollings Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. The three aims of the COE Office are: 1) assess and monitor the cancer burden and needs in SC, 2) disseminate and implement evidence-based cancer education and screening strategies, and 3) facilitate novel and high-impact research.
All four of my grandparents died before I was born. I lost my mother when I was 35 years old and my father when I was 38. As a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed at Stage 0 both times, I am committed to developing strategies and interventions that help people live longer, healthier lives and spend more time with their loved ones.
My cousin Carla, who is battling Stage 4 breast cancer, offers this advice: “Keep the faith, stay positive, follow the guidance of your clinical care team, and maintain a close relationship with your physician. Friends, family, and faith will help carry you through.”
The LOWVELO Bike Ride fundraiser helps to advance cancer research while promoting interpersonal relationships and social support among the participants. I am excited to participate in this important cause!
