About City Year:
City Year's mission is to help students and schools succeed. We partner with schools in communities challenged by systemic inequities to create learning environments where all students can build on their strengths and fully engage in their learning. Our signature Whole School Whole Child model—which reaches more than 4,500 Providence students in six schools—provides a comprehensive set of supports that foster success in school by weaving together both academic and social-emotional learning. Through high-impact individualized, classroom and school-wide supports, City Year helps students develop the important academic and life skills they need to reach their full potential.
In normal times the need for City Year’s research-based services is great, but the trauma and disruption to learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has made our work even more essential. Following school closures in March, City Year is continued its services to our partner schools and supported teachers’ virtual learning plans. City Year AmeriCorps members are used technology to support students as they would in person—providing help on specific assignments, offering encouragement, and building social-emotional skills. If schools begin next fall with online learning, City Year AmeriCorps members will be prepared to employ recognizable pillars of our in-school service to effectively support learning and engage students virtually, until in-person schooling resumes.
