Our Cause

Once released from prison, women must obtain employment and gain housing immediately. Over 27,000 Louisiana women are under community supervision as of June 2022, with over 50% being Black.

Approximately 80% of justice-involved women are mothers who will be responsible for taking care of their children when released from prison. Research shows that 25% do not have a high school or equivalent (GED), and only 55% worked before incarceration. Post-incarceration, women are more likely to suffer from mental and physical health issues. Ten times more women in the justice system are homeless than the general population. 

With low educational attainment and fewer employment opportunities than male ex-offenders, many justice-involved women will accept non-permanent, low-level, or entry-level positions at $7.25 an hour, the Louisiana minimum wage. In addition, monthly housing costs in Louisiana average well over $1,000. Louisiana minimum wage is wholly inadequate when you factor in the cost of basic necessities, childcare, and post-incarceration fines and fees.  

Personal, sociological, economic, and lifestyle factors all contribute to recidivism. The three-year Louisiana recidivism rate is 34%,  leading to higher taxes, as the average total cost per inmate is $17,000, per the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Recidivism impacts our communities by resulting in the loss of employees, taxpayers, mothers, and, disproportionately, women of color.

A study conducted at Harvard University in 2019 confirmed that 64% of formerly incarcerated women obtained stable employment after completing a wrap-around program. In addition, compared to national estimates of 40%, less than 6% were reincarcerated within 18 months.

SCLPMI's goal is to help each justice-involved woman start on the path toward self-sufficiency by addressing the many employment barriers she has faced throughout her lifetime.

To date, our accomplishments include: 

• Over 142 women have completed the Reentry Workforce Development program; 
• 100% computer and Internet assistance and advanced technical training; 
• 88% secured high school diplomas or equivalent; 
• 61% understand credit better and have credit scores above 580+; 
• over 50% have written resumes, 
• and 69% are gainfully employed.  
• 35% of our students started their businesses. 
• Grandma's House in Jefferson Parish, which opened in February 2022, provides transitional housing for 15 women and her children while she starts the Reentry Workforce program.

Glam U is a youth empowerment organization. Glam U's mission is to inspire girls to walk in their purpose. Glam U's innovative programs focus on building inner beauty and self-esteem by connecting with girls through personal development activities, social-emotional learning, and modeling lessons. Glam U believes that confidence is key in every aspect of life and that all girls deserve to feel beautiful - inside and out!

Glam U has been servicing New Orleans and surrounding areas since 2016. Glam U teaches girls to feel beautiful inside and out. Glam U's programs focus on personal development through modeling lessons and confidence-building activities. Through our community-based and school-based programming, we continue to fulfill our mission of inspiring girls to walk in their purpose!

Since the Summer of 2021, Glam U has reached 140 girls between ages 5-17 through our Glam Girl Academy and Glambassador Programs. We are on track to double our reach by Summer 2023. 

Funds raised through the Thankful For 2nd Chance 5K event will be used towards class supplies, curriculum development, and program activities for both programs. We hope to raise enough funds to serve at least 50 girls.
