Description

The Inaugural Tour de Moonshine 100k/50k Bicycle Tour will take place September 21, 2019 at 9:00am - Rain or Shine - departing from the 120 Birch Tree Way; Cosby, TN 37722(adjacent to the East Gatlinburg KOA). Proceeds will benefit the development of the Shadows of the Smokies Greenway Project.

GENERAL:  Ride at your leisure and enjoy a fully supported ride in the Smoky Mountains.  Choose between 50k, 50k (w/ gravel) or 100k rides with cookies and treats along the way. These routes encompass several of the roads in Sevier and Cocke County that the moonshiners of old used to run from the Revenuers (federal agents).  Feel the isolation, feel the rush and see the beauty of the Great Smoky National Park in a whole new way!

After the ride we will have a live band & BBQ with all the fixins.  Riders will be allowed to shower at the campground.  Do not miss the rare opportunity to ride these beautiful roads with moonshiner Kelly from the Moonshiner show on Discovery.  As our official ride host, he will also participate and hang around after to visit with everyone.

This is a non-competitive, bicycle tour on maintained county roads and a couple low traffic state routes in Sevier and Cocke Counties.   All proceeds of this Charity Bicycle Ride will benefit the Shadows of the Smokies Greenway Project, a non-profit focused on connecting the Cosby Campground (Adventure side of the Smokies to Gatlinburg proper by a suggested cycling friendly route.

The first 60 registered will receive a quality t-shirt, shotglass, swag bag.

START: All routes start at the East Gatlinburg KOA.  Gatlinburg and Cosby are popular tourist destinations in the United States, easily accessible from Knoxville, Nashville and Chattanooga TN, Asheville NC, Greenville SC, and Atlanta GA.  Start and day-of ride registration times will be between 7:00 am and 8:45 am.

ROUTES: Our 3 routes (100km/50km/50kgravel) feature the beauty of Cocke and Sevier Counties with interesting and historic sites along the way, with beautiful streams, bridges, natural areas, mountain vistas, including Route 32 aka... "the Cosby Cobra."  The routes do have some difficult climbs, as they are situated in the mountains, adjacent from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 50k route is great for beginning tour riders, however this route is still quite challenging as the terrain is mountainous.  The 50k gravel route offers steep gravel climbs that utilizes many of the same roads as the other routes.  This route offers 8-miles of the most challenging gravel in Cocke County. Finalized routes will be announced by August 1.

FOOD: Snacks will be available at start/finish at the East Gatlinburg KOA and additional rest stops on the course (one will include a public restroom). The ride will conclude with a live band at the campground starting at 1pm and playing though 4pm.  We will have Max’s Specialty Barbeque and Beers.

SUPPORT: There will be SAG support vehicles available, by cell phone to help with minor repairs. All emergencies should be reported to local law enforcement by calling 911.  There will be at least one photographer on site.

HELMETS: All ride participants agree to wear an ASTM approved bicycle helmet.  Make sure it is properly fitted and secured.

FEES:  Ride fees are $55 per person.  Price increases to $60 on 8/21/2019 until ride day.

100% of proceeds from this event will be donated to the building of the Shadow of the Smokies Adventure trail.

We put the safety of its participants, spectators, staff and volunteers first. Dangerous weather conditions pose a unique challenge to an event of any size, distance or location.  We have adopted this Inclement Weather Policy:
Weather forecasts will be monitored prior to the event, with special attention placed on the possibility of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, high winds, extreme temperatures and humidity. If necessary, athletes will be made aware of these conditions on Ober Gatlinburg as well as through other available means of communication such as e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and public address announcements.
The Executive Director and Race Director in consultation, when available, with law enforcement, fire/EMS, other medical officers and other officials, will monitor the weather and make a decision if any action will be taken to modify the race. Possible changes include: Altering the start time, altering the course, or in extreme situations cancellation of the event. Visible lightning occurring within 30 minutes of the scheduled start will cause the ride to be postponed for a minimum of 30 minutes. Additional sightings will continue to delay the ride in 30-minute increments up to a maximum of 3 delays.
Charity Ride personnel reserve the right to delay, cancel, or suspend the race or modify the course due to inclement weather. As stated on registration and race pages, there are no refunds or transfers. Participants must abandon the race if ordered to do so by the race personnel, medical staff, fire/paramedics or police personnel.
