CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET?

As a lawyer, clients share their secrets with me all the time—big ones, little ones, and sometimes funny ones. Now, I’m going to share a secret with you. CANCER SCARES ME. Specifically, multiple myeloma terrifies me. This disease has been lurking in the shadows ever since Sarah was diagnosed in 2005.

The Defeat Myeloma race began as an act of defiance by Sarah and me. No disease can stop us from living our lives. Almost ten years later, our work remains incomplete, but our commitment is unwavering. As parents of two wonderful kids, our resolve to find a cure is unshakeable. Simply put, Maddie and Ryan deserve to have their mama around for many decades to come.

Although my secret fear of cancer will never completely go away until there is a cure, I am so hopeful. Together, we have raised over ONE MILLION DOLLARS over the past nine races. This money has seeded promising and breakthrough research projects. For instance, current research to more effectively target cancer cells would not be possible without our race dollars. Fred Hutch’s early research has expanded research to other leading cancer centers across the country.

There’s no secret to the race’s success. Raising funds to cure cancer takes a village. Please join me in supporting our 10th annual race by joining our team/donating to the cause. Thanks.

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells found in bone marrow.  Normal plasma cells help the immune system fight disease, but when plasma cells become cancerous they grow out of control and can produce a tumor called a plasmacytoma.  If someone has more than one plasmacytoma, they have multiple myeloma.

Why support this event?

Defeat Multiple Myeloma’s mission is to raise awareness of multiple myeloma while supporting research that seeks to discover new treatments, improve the quality of life for myeloma patients, and ultimately find a cure for this devastating form of cancer. Funds from the 2022 Defeat Multiple Myeloma event will continue to support immunotherapy research and clinical trials at Fred Hutch which are using CAR-T cells and have shown very promising early results for patients.
