We all know someone, are someone or have heard of someone being affected by cancer. It's not an uncommon word that we hear anymore, unfortunately. My story is not uncommon like many others I was affected personally in 2013, I found a lump, went through treatment, surgery with clean margins, follow ups every 6 months to then yearly follow ups. I got lucky!
However, my story isn't over and the one that I am most affected by is my mother's journey and the loss of her, my best friend in 2018. I will never forget the call I got in June of 2017 when she told she was diagnosed with non small cell lung cancer. She was put on 24 hour oxygen and scheduled for a thoracentesis (a procedure to remove water from your lungs) where one of the doctor's happen to tell my dad that she was at a stage IV diagnosis. After this procedure she went managed to withstand chemo treatments every 3 weeks for a stent of 3 days at a time as an outpatient. We soon saw her lose her hair and slow down as she continued and finished treatment. On December 31, 2017 she got to ring the bell! We thought we were in the clear. In the new year her doctor's decided that it would be a good idea to start some radiation as immunotherapy. We didn't see this as a bad thing and still thought we were moving in the right direction of healing. Sadly, in March Mom was hospitalized for 5 days and was released home to hospice care where she passed away 17 hours later surrounded by her family. I miss my mom every singe day and there isn't one of those days that I don't wish I could have her back!
So yes, I joined LOWVELO in 2021 (this will be my 6th year riding and fundraising for LOWVELO) because I am passionate about making a difference in my community and helping to find a cure for cancer!
