Let's Go Team Emily 2024!

Welcome to My Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk. San Diego Fundraising Page!

Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk San Diego is a 15-mile Bike Ride or 5K Run/Walk that is very important to me.  I am raising money to help The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County so they can provide wraparound support services and programs at no cost to individuals and families affected by epilepsy.  Please help me support this cause and spread awareness for epilepsy.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
  • 3.4 million people nationwide are affected by epilepsy.
  • 50,000 San Diegans are living with epilepsy.
  • Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages.
  • Epilepsy means the same thing as "seizure disorders."
  • Epilepsy is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can cause other health problems.
  • Epilepsy is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control varying from person-to-person.
  • Public misunderstandings of epilepsy cause challenges that are often worse than the seizures.

Epilepsy is more than seizures.  Every story matters in this fight.  Here is my personal story of WHY this matters...

Welcome to Team Emily 2024!

This year marks the 11th year we have participated in Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk. for the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego.  It is our way of giving back to the folks at the foundation who were so supportive of Emily and our family when she was first diagnosed with epilepsy back in 2010.  Today, we continue to rely on the services they provide including counseling, support groups and other resources that help us and the other 50,000 people in San Diego County with epilepsy.

Last year I updated you all about the challenges of managing my daughter’s epilepsy from afar as she is in her final year at NYU. The one thing that kept the stress levels down (a bit) was Emily’s dedication to advocacy and her efforts to train the faculty, friends and people around her in seizure first aid so that in the event of a seizure, they would know what to do.  Unfortunately, Emily had a seizure this past November and despite the training and documentation on seizure first aid she provided, the steps to ensure her safety were not taken. It was the first time ever that we experienced a situation where our trainings did not ensure action by those who were trained.  Thankfully, Emily’s roommate came to her rescue and did a fabulous job following these essential, life-saving steps for a Tonic Clonic seizure:

1)    Turned her on her side so she wouldn’t choke.

2)    Timed the start of the seizure to determine when it goes longer than 5 minutes.

3)    Put something soft under her head.

4)    Called 911 when she had trouble breathing and the seizure lasted longer than 5 minutes.

5)    Responded with compassion when she regained consciousness.

This year I am more motivated than ever to speak out about seizure first aid and I encourage each one of you to review the steps you need to take – it can be lifesaving.  In this case, Emily’s roommate saved her life as the seizure lasted 12 minutes and she was choking. Please, take the time to learn the steps and if you feel super inspired, the Epilepsy Foundation offers an on-line training that is thorough and empowering.  The more you know, the less scary it is to act.
