Welcome to My Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk. San Diego Team Fundraising Page!
Three years ago, our family’s world changed when Micah was diagnosed with epilepsy. What began as a frightening and confusing season quickly became a journey that has tested our family in ways we never imagined.
Since his diagnosis, Micah has endured more than twenty tonic clonic seizures, multiple injuries, surgeries, hospitalizations, ambulance rides, and long inpatient EEG stays. He has been through countless orthopedic and neurology appointments and several anti epileptic medications as we continue searching for what will truly help. Watching your child suffer in ways you cannot prevent is something no parent is prepared for, and if I could carry this disease for him, I would without hesitation.
This past year brought both triumph and heartache. After months of uncertainty, we reached a milestone we had long dreamed of. Micah was seizure free for six months. That time gave us hope and a glimpse of what life could look like. Then, without warning, he experienced a breakthrough seizure while alone that resulted in a skull fracture, a brain bleed, and a brain clot. It was devastating. And yet, Micah continues to show us what true resilience looks like. He is a strong and determined young adult who is doing remarkably well despite his injuries and this significant setback.
For now, Micah has had to take a step back from college and he cannot drive, but we are doing everything possible to support his healing, independence, and future goals. Every day, he reminds us that progress does not always move in a straight line, and that strength is often built in the hardest moments.
As a nurse practitioner and an Epilepsy Ambassador, this journey has shaped me both professionally and personally. I have experienced epilepsy through my clinical work and through my role as a mother walking beside her child every day. Our family is deeply grateful for Micah’s medical team, our friends, and our family whose love and support continue to carry us forward.
Team Micah walks with hope. Hope for better treatments. Hope for awareness and understanding. Hope for a future where fewer families have to live with fear and uncertainty. Thank you for standing with us and for being part of this journey. Your support means more than words can express.
Sharon's Ride.Run.Walk San Diego is a 15-mile Bike Ride or 5K Run/Walk that is very important to me. I am raising money to help The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County so they can provide wraparound support services and programs at no cost to individuals and families affected by epilepsy. Join the movement that brings our community together to educate, spread awareness and make a difference for the people we love who live with epilepsy.
