Water is life

During the week of Oct 15th to 24th I have committed to run (albeit slowly) 6k as part of the World Water Classic which will raise funds for Water For People programs that are impacting the lives of people across 9 countries (Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and India).

I want to share a little about why I am involved with this organization and why it was an easy decision to raise funds for this event in October. Today 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water and more than 1 in 2 people do not have access to a decent toilet. This issue is a global issue, a human issue but also an issue that specifically impacts the lives of women and children disproportionately. Why is that?

First, women and girls usually bear the responsibility for collecting water, which is often very time-consuming and arduous. Second, women and girls are more vulnerable to abuse and attack while walking to and using a toilet or open defecation site. And third, women have specific hygiene needs during menstruation, pregnancy and child rearing. https://www.unwater.org/water-facts/gender/

This past weekend, my family and I went camping at a Provincial Park in Ontario, kind of in the middle of nowhere. While I was there, given my involvement with Water For People, I couldn't help but consider how extremely fortunate we are in Canada to be able to drive into the wilderness for a weekend away from home and still have potable water running freely out of taps installed throughout a campground and to have access to what are called "comfort stations" which include showers with hot water, toilets and sinks with soap and toilet paper available. I reflected on that privilege but more so, I thought about how families around the world do not have this "comfort" even in their primary residence, village or community.

What I've told you above is my why. It's why I'm compelled to work with and for Water For People on behalf of Brenntag and it's why I'm doing this 6k run. I'd love to chat more with you about this if you would like to get involved with Water For People in anyway, but also would be so honored if you would donate even $1 to this cause.
