Toni's Race: Strollin' for the Colon

Do you know that colon cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths.  Early detection can make all the difference!  

Toni’s Race is the 14th annual 5k race/walk held by Strollin’ for the Colon.  It is the major fundraiser for the organization.  Proceeds remain in Monroe and Livingston counties in upstate New York.  

Strollin' for the Colon was formed by a nurse whose sister was diagnosed with colon cancer.  The organization was formed with the idea to help raise awareness and help others who are fighting this disease.  Our mission is to raise funds for colon cancer research, education and to help patients and families in financial need during their treatment. 

Funds raised through donations and Toni's Race have gone to the Wilmot Cancer Center Patient Needs Fund, the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, Cancer Services of Monroe County and Livingston County Department of Health Cancer Prevention Program, among others.

Strollin' for the Colon has helped fund BarberED, BeautiED, then Screened, an initiative aimed at promoting colorectal cancer awareness and education within trusted neighborhood hubs: barbershops and beauty salons.  Additionally, Strollin' funds are supporting a study of patients with colon cancer under the age of 45 to determine their needs not being met by current treatment approaches.

Members of the board of Strollin' for the Colon, which include physicians, are available to give talks to any local groups interested.  The topics include awareness of the importance of screening, screening options, and knowing family history.
