The History of the Fenner Ride

1998 | A Life Remembered

The story of the Fenner Ride began with tragedy. In 1998, Dr. Fenner McConnell—a respected district medical examiner, devoted husband and father, and passionate cyclist—was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding across the Bob Sikes Bridge.

His loss deeply impacted the local cycling community and inspired friends and fellow riders to ensure his passion for cycling and service would never be forgotten.

1999 | The First Memorial Ride

In 1999, the West Florida Wheelmen organized the inaugural memorial ride in honor of Dr. McConnell. What began as a tribute quickly became an annual tradition, bringing cyclists together to celebrate his life and the friendships built through the cycling community.

Early 2000s | Honoring Two Legacies

A few years later, tragedy struck again when West Florida Wheelmen member Matt Wantz was killed while working at a local bicycle shop.

To honor both men, the event was renamed the Dr. Fenner McConnell and Matt Wantz Memorial Ride, ensuring that both of their legacies would continue to inspire riders for generations.

2010s | Riding for Something Bigger

As the event continued to grow, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida became a core organizing partner and the primary beneficiary of the ride.

The Fenner Ride evolved from a memorial event into one of the organization's signature annual fundraisers, helping create and support life-changing mentoring relationships for children throughout Northwest Florida.

2023 | Celebrating 25 Years

The 25th Annual Fenner Ride marked an incredible milestone.

Cyclists from across the region gathered to celebrate a quarter century of community, remembrance, and purpose. Longtime riders were joined by members of the McConnell family, including Dr. McConnell's daughter and son-in-law, continuing a tradition that has spanned generations.

Today

Today, the Fenner Ride begins in Milton, Florida, offering cyclists four route options—18, 44, 64, and 100 miles—through the scenic roads surrounding the Blackwater River State Forest.

While much has changed since that first ride in 1999, the mission remains the same: honoring the memories of Dr. Fenner McConnell and Matt Wantz while investing in brighter futures for local youth through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida.

Every mile ridden helps keep their legacy alive.
