1. Race Length

  • The racecourse shall be exactly 25 yards (75 feet) in length, clearly marked from start to finish.

2. Participant Requirements

  • Participants must be standing upright inside their sack at the start of the race.

  • Each racer must be fully inside their sack, with the sack pulled up at least to their waist.

  • Both feet must remain inside the sack at all times during the race.

  • Hands must remain on the sack (holding it up) and may not touch the ground unless falling.

3. Potato Sack Specifications

  • All sacks must be uniform in size and material (typically burlap or heavy canvas).

  • Minimum sack size: 36 inches tall × 24 inches wide

  • No modifications (straps, grips, footholds) are allowed.

4. Starting Procedure

  • All racers must begin behind the start line.

  • A whistle, horn, or official signal will begin the race.

  • Any false starts will result in immediate disqualification.

5. Racing Rules

  • Racers must move only by hopping — walking, running, or crawling is not allowed.

  • If a racer falls, they may get up and continue without exiting the sack.

  • Cutting corners, stepping out of bounds, or removing the sack results in disqualification.

6. Finish Line

  • The race is complete when a participant’s full body crosses the finish line, still inside the sack.

  • Photo or video finish may be used for verification if necessary.

  • All racers participate at their own risk and must sign a waiver, if required.
