Conquer the long, sunny days and join us outside for the Cap Trail Summer Challenge. Choose a distance goal and run, walk, bike, skate, handcycle, or dance your way on the Virginia Capital Trail to an awesome and active summer! You can...
We also have four shuttles and two additional events, the Creek2Creek Skate and the Slurpee Hustle, exclusive to the Summer Challenge. Add these optional offerings to your Challenge registration to help you reach your distance goal (more information below)!
While you do need to complete all of the Virginia Capital Trail in its entirety (passing each mile post at least once) for each Challenge, this will be on the honor system. But why wouldn't you want to see the whole Trail?
Complete your miles between June 1st and September 5th, submitting your results on your RunSignUp profile (result submission will stay open for 48 hours after the challenge ends). There will be a $5 price bump on July 20th and registration closes September 2nd. Upon completing your Summer Challenge, you will be sent a t-shirt on the next shipment date (see "Shipping Dates" section below).
Share your Summer experience on social media with #CapTrailChallenge
All proceeds benefit the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation.
If you donate at least $100 DURING REGISTRATION, $25 will be deducted from your registration fee.
If you start a FUNDRAISER that reaches $100, you will be refunded $25 from your registration.
How do I participate? Register for a distance and complete the whole Trail (51.7 miles) at least once. You can run, walk, bike, skate, hand-cycle, dance - whatever gets you active on the trail! The Cap Trail Summer Challenge is about keeping you motivated to have an active summer. If you're on wheels, you're required to wear a helmet. As you complete your miles, submit your results so you can reach your goal.
How do I submit my results? Through your RunSignUp profile. Follow these instructions on how to do so.
Where does the Challenge take place? At least partially on the Virginia Capital Trail. For each challenge, you will need to complete all 51.7 miles of the Trail. If you've signed up for more miles, it's up to you where to ride the rest.
What is the Virginia Capital Trail? The Virginia Capital Trail is a 51.7 mile multi-use trail running from Jamestown to Richmond along the scenic Route 5 corridor. Get more info here.
When do I get my t-shirt? Registration for the Cap Trail Summer Challenge does not guarantee you a shirt. Once your submitted results reflect your completion of the distance you registered for, your shirt will be mailed to you in the next shipment wave (more details below).
Can I purchase additional t-shirts for other people? You cannot. The shirts are available only for those who have completed one of the Challenges.
My shirt doesn't fit, can I exchange it? You cannot. If you need a different size shirt, you can submit $15 by 9/7 to cover the cost of the new shirt and postage. Click here, select other, enter $15 as the amount, and note in the comments section that you need a different Summer Challenge shirt size (make sure to enter the size you need).
Do I have to sign up for one of the additional events/shuttles? Nope. The shuttles, Creek2Creek Skate, and Slurpee Hustle are completely optional.
Can I still sign up for the additional events/shuttles after my registration is processed? Yes! As long as those events/shuttles haven't sold out or occurred. Log-in to your RunSignUp profile and go to the Summer Challenge event to do so.
Do the additional events count towards my Summer Challenge goal? Yes! Just log your results as you normally would. The Summer Challenge mileage calculation parameters still apply to the Creek2Creek Skate and Slurpee Hustle.
Can I sign up for the additional events/shuttles without signing up for the Summer Challenge? No. The shuttles, Creek2Creek Skate, and Slurpee Hustle are exclusive to Summer Challenge registrants.
I completed my challenge and want to keep going! What do I do? That's awesome! You have a couple of options. 1) Continue to log your miles as you have been. We won't be sending you anything additional after you've completed your Challenge, but you can continue to track your progress with us. 2) Sign up for another Challenge! You will need to register again, but this is the way to get another t-shirt. You can log the miles you already completed this summer or start from scratch - your call!
Step one is to pick a goal for your Summer Challenge. Then you will need to complete the entire Virginia Capital Trail, and any additional miles needed, to reach your goal. Run, walk, bike, skate, scoot, unicycle, dance, etc. - whatever mode you choose. Log your results to move towards completing the Challenge.
How can you complete the entire Trail? You've got options!
If your goal is 51.7, you'll need to cover each mile of the trail. Think in terms of passing every mile marker. This means you'll want a drop off and pick up system. Sign up with a friend and shuttle vehicles (one at each end of the section you intend to complete) or ask somebody to pick you up when you're finished. You can also utilize Amtrak.
Note: You could go 26 miles out and 26 miles back, thereby doing 52 miles on the Trail but still not have completed ALL of the miles of the Trail.
If you're aiming to do one of the longer challenges (103.4 miles or 361.9 miles), you can park in different places along the Trail and go out and back to your vehicle each time!
Miles completed while participating in the optional, additional events, the Creek2Creek Skate and Slurpee Hustle, can count towards your Summer Challenge goal as long as the above parameters are followed.
To submit your mileage, do the following:

By all accounts, it's gonna be hot on Saturday, August 13th. What better way to cool off than with a 7-Eleven Slurpee? The first ever Slurpee Hustle is a run or ride to the 7-Eleven by mile 48 for a free Slurpee and hot dog. Participants will also receive an event water bottle.
On August 13th, meet at the Pop-Up Rest Stop at the Intermediate Terminal between miles 50 and 51. You can show up any time between 10:00AM-1:00PM to do your Slurpee Hustle. You’ll need to get your 7-Eleven coupons and swag before Hustlin’. There'll be yard games, snacks, and water for you to enjoy.
Your Slurpee Hustle can just be running or biking to 7-Eleven on your own, but we highly recommend the following format for optimum fun, relay-style:
Approximate mileage for the relay will be 2-miles for the runners and 5-miles for the bikers. Feel free to do more!
But wait, there's even more fun for biker-runner teams! There'll be an outfit contest. The theme: 7-Eleven, of course! We want to see your fashionable interpretation of our favorite convenience store chain. The biker-runner-teams with the best outfits will win Virginia Capital Trail goodie bags. Winners will be chosen at 12:00PM.
Need to rent a bike? Check out The Kickstand (right by the Intermediate Terminal) or Kul Wheels for an electric bike (across from 7-Eleven).
There is a cap on this event. So grab your spouse, friend, kid, third-cousin-twice-removed, or keep it chill like a Slurpee and sign-up by August 10th!
You asked for it and you got it! Add this optional $40 service to your registration and get a ride for you and your bike from one end of the trail to the other. Skaters, runners, and walkers are welcome, too!
There on two shuttles on 7/24 and two on 8/28. A rider can only do one shuttle on either date. The dates, times, and locations of the four shuttles are as follows:
Only 20 spaces available per shuttle!
There is a minimum needed to run the shuttle. If the minimum isn't met, the service will be cancelled and the cost fully refunded. This is the only reason a refund would be applicable. Otherwise, the shuttle will run rain or shine.
Thanks to RVA Paddlesports for helping make this happen!
Skaters unite! The first ever Creek2Creek Skate is an exclusive event to Summer Challenge participants. Add this optional $25 event to your registration to meet and hit the Trail with other skaters and get a hipsack!
On Saturday July 9th, meet at Four Mile Creek at 9:00AM at the Pop Up Rest Stop. There'll be three out-and-back route options: a 10k to Bailey Creek, half-marathon to Turkey Creek, and marathon to Herring Creek. The half-marathon and marathon will be lead by experienced Cap Trail skaters Nadine and Julien (respectively) and there'll be refreshments at those turn-around points. You're not required to choose one of these routes and are welcome to keep skating after the Four Mile Creek Pop-Up Rest Stop ends at 1:00PM.
Prior to the event, Nadine and Julien will lead a skate clinic at Dorey Park on Sunday, June 26th from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Meet at the pavilion at the end of the park near the pond to learn how to skate outside, control your speed, and brake confidently. Click here to sign up. You don't have to be registered for the Summer Challenge or Creek2Creek Skate to attend the clinic.
To participate in the Creek2Creek Skate:
While skating, be aware of intersections and other Trail users. The Trail will still be open to the public.
If there's rain, the event will be cancelled and a happy hour will be scheduled.
The final day to register for the Creek2Creek Skate is July 6th.
We do not allow refunds on this event. Once your registration is processed after the 15 minute grace period, you cannot change your distance or remove yourself from an additional event/service. In case of severe weather or a local/state/national emergency, VCTF reserves the right to cancel/alter/modify the ride for safety concerns.
