Due to COVID-19, we have temporarily closed registration for all 2020 races until we know for certain that the events will actually happen. Racers wishing to express their intent to register and to save their spot in any race (without paying or entering any CC info), may join the waitlist for that particular event. We will notify those on the waitlist when the 'go/no-go' decision has been made, which will be AT LEAST three weeks before each event. If the event is a ‘go’, those on the waitlist may complete their registration, if they choose. Sprocket Fuel is a cross-country mountain bike race that will challenge mountain bikers of all ability levels, from novice to expert. Depending on age and/or skill-based class, competitors will complete ½ to three laps of an 8-mile race course. The scenic, forest covered race course at Carolina North Forest includes a mixture of smooth, twisty, and flowing dirt trails, rock and root strewn single-track, and challenging hill climbs.
Owned and operated by the University of North Carolina and located just north of the main UNC campus, the beautiful 750-acre wooded wonderland at Carolina North Forest has ponds, streams, open fields, and over 20 miles of forested hiking and mountain biking trails. Come experience some of Chapel Hill’s best single-track.
After the race, athletes will gather for fun post-race festivities which include tasty food, great music, and a fun awards ceremony (with many giveaways). Awards will be presented five-deep in each class.
The event will be capped at 300 total athletes spread throughout 18 different classes.
• 6:30am-9:15am: Check-in (closes 15 minutes before start of each race)

Racers self-select between 18 different age and/or skill-based classes. These classes have been created so riders can start and race alongside athletes of similar age and ability. This event will include waves and three start times to safety separate the different classes. Within each race, traditionally faster classes will start first and then each subsequent class will be separated in waves of 1-2 minutes. For age-based classes, age is determined as of 12/31/20. Junior racers may 'race up' with permission of race director. For example, a 14 year old junior may race in beginner, sport, or expert classes if they have the skill. Definition of Skill-Based Classes. Use the following to guide you in selecting your class.
• Novice – newer rider who has never or minimally raced in the past.
• Beginner – feel confident on your bike, but you do not have much experience racing. Or you have not raced in a long time and it is difficult for you to ride more than 15 miles. You might have raced in the beginner class before and have not broken the top three finishers on a consistent basis.
• Sport – you ride often and feel very confident on your bike. You are in good riding shape, ride fast, and can ride 20 miles in an outing. You have podiumed at the beginner level or you have raced in the sport class, can keep up with other sport riders, and feel comfortable competing at that level. You might have raced in the sport class before and have not broken the top three finishers on a consistent basis.
• Expert – you ride very often and feel extremely confident on your bike. You are in excellent riding shape, ride very fast, and can easily ride over 20 miles in an outing. You have podiumed at the sport level or you have raced in the expert class, can keep up with other expert riders, and feel comfortable competing at that level.
