Assist with pre-race setup, including setting up start and finish lines, organizing signage, arranging water stations, placing course markers, and preparing other essential race-day equipment. Volunteers will help ensure the event is ready for participants, creating a smooth and safe environment. Volunteers should be comfortable with light lifting and working as a team. No experience required; instructions will be provided on-site. You’ll be done in time to cheer on the runners or jump into another volunteer role if desired.

Early Bib Pickup (Wednesday) High Priority

Assist with early bib pickup for race participants. Duties include checking in runners, distributing race bibs, and answering any questions about the event. Volunteers should be friendly, organized, and prepared to help participants get ready for race day.

Location

Meet at Arctic Circle Restaurant, 340 N Coast Hwy, Newport, OR 97365, on Wednesday evening for early bib pickup duties. Please arrive a few minutes early to receive instructions.

Greet volunteers as they arrive, assist with check-in, and provide instructions and materials. This role also involves keeping track of volunteer attendance and assisting with any questions.

Parking & Flow Volunteers

Details

Direct participants and spectators to appropriate parking areas, ensuring smooth traffic flow and efficient use of available spaces. Parking attendants can also guide participants to the start area. Once runners start, head to the finish area to help with cheering, medals, or other tasks.

Course Monitoring & Safety

Course Marshal Crew High Priority

Details

Be the eyes and cheers out on the course! Marshals ensure runners stay on the correct route, encourage participants, and keep intersections safe.

Kids Run (9:00–9:15 AM): Short, high-energy course.

5K & 10K (Start 9:30 AM): Some marshals will reposition after the Kids Run for the main races.

Once runners have passed your assigned spot, please return to the finish line area to help hand out medals, distribute water, or cheer on finishers.

Bike Leader & Course Guide - 5K

"Lead the 5K race by riding a bike in front of the lead runners, guiding them along the course and ensuring they stay on the correct path. The Bike Leader should be familiar with the course and maintain a steady pace to stay just ahead of the lead runners. This role is crucial for keeping the front runners on track.

Medical Team - Oregon Coast Community College Nursing Program

Details

The Medical Team, comprised of volunteers from the Oregon Coast Community College Nursing Program, will be stationed at the start/finish line of the Newport Turkey Trot. The team will ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, providing medical support as needed throughout the event.

Responsibilities:

- Monitor participants for signs of distress or injury at the start/finish line.
- Provide basic first aid and care to runners as they complete the race.
- Assist in coordinating any emergency services, if necessary.
- Maintain communication with race organizers in case of any medical emergencies.


Time Commitment:
Volunteers are needed from 8:30 AM to 10:45 AM on November 28, 2024.

Location

Medical volunteers will be stationed at the start/finish line.

Course Sweeper

At least 1 more volunteer needed.

Details

Follow the last runners (either on foot or by bike) to ensure all participants complete the course safely. The sweeper can assist or alert medical staff if someone needs help and also signal to course monitors when they can leave their posts.

Start at the end of the runner group and move along the course.

On-Course Aid & Support

Water Station Attendant

Details

Set up and manage water stations along the course. Duties include filling and handing out water cups, encouraging runners, and keeping the area clean and litter-free.

Finish Line Crew High Priority

Be part of the celebration! Help manage the finish chute, hand out medals, water, and snacks, and cheer for finishers. Great energy and big smiles welcome! (Some course marshals may join this group after their section is clear.)

Packet Pickup - Race Day High Priority

Finish Line Food Station

Capture the fun and spirit of the Newport Turkey Trot! Take photos of the start, finish, and runners on the course. Candid moments and happy faces encouraged. Please share photos with the race director after the event.
