Triumph Over Tragedy: John Bunyard’s Inspiring Return to Life
Mesa, AZ — October 1, 2025.
After years of unimaginable challenges — a debilitating car accident, a traumatic brain injury, and the heartbreaking loss of his son, John Bunyard ll. John Bunyard is reclaiming his life. His story is one of faith, resilience, and the incredible power of God’s grace to restore peace in the midst of pain.
A Life Rewritten
Eight years ago, John’s life changed in an instant. A young night-shift worker fell asleep at the wheel while driving nearly 80 miles per hour. The vehicle slammed into John’s car as he sat stopped on an exit ramp off Highway 60, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving four other vehicles.
The result was catastrophic. John suffered a massive traumatic brain injury (TBI), leaving him unable to drive, struggling with memory loss, and fighting daily to regain basic functions. Overnight, his world was turned upside down his career halted, his independence gone, and his role as provider for his family reversed.
His daughter Emilia stepped in as his driver while John endured months of rehabilitation with vision specialists, concussion experts, and brain injury therapists.
“It’s been a slow and grueling recovery,” John recalls. “But I’m not giving up.”
Loss Upon Loss
As if the accident weren’t enough, tragedy struck again in 2022. John’s eldest son was shot and killed after bravely stepping in to protect his girlfriend during an altercation. The senseless act of violence left John reeling, compounding his grief and testing the very limits of his faith.
“Life handed me more pain than I ever thought I could carry,” John reflects. “But with faith, perseverance, and the love of those around me, I’ve learned that healing is possible even when it feels out of reach.”
Through it all, John clung to the belief that God’s grace and forgiveness can heal even the deepest wounds. “There came a point where I had to forgive not just others, but myself,” he shares. “That’s when peace came. Real, unshakable peace that only comes from God.”
Pedaling Toward Purpose
Determined to rebuild his life one step at a time, John turned to cycling as both physical therapy and spiritual renewal. What began as a modest personal goal to finish the 102-mile El Tour de Tucson has evolved into a mission of perseverance and purpose.
Cycling became John’s sanctuary. Every mile pushed him further toward healing mentally, physically, and spiritually. Now, after months of dedication, he’s set his sights on placing among the top finishers in the 42nd running of the event this November.
“Cycling became my therapy,” John says. “Every mile reminded me that recovery isn’t about going back to who you were it’s about discovering who God is shaping you to be.”
From Recovery to Renewal
Today, John isn’t just back on the bike he’s back in life. After competing in El Tour de Tucson he plans on competing in elite races like the Tour de Scottsdale and the Midwest Unbound Gravel Ride in Kansas.
John alongside his wife Connie and daughter Lizzy run a successful remodeling company. Valley Remodeling will be celebrating 15 years serving their community on 2/11/2026. They specialize in helping empty nesters transform their everyday spaces into luxurious retreats.
Whether on the job site or the racecourse, John brings the same determination and faith that carried him through recovery. He’s also a Rotarian, a mentor, and an advocate for brain injury recovery and mental health awareness using his voice to remind others that hope and healing are possible through grace, perseverance, and community.
“Through God’s grace and forgiveness, I’ve found total peace,” John says. “If my story can help one person find hope in their darkest moment, then every mile, every hardship, and every tear was worth it.”
A Message of Hope
John’s journey serves as a living testament that tragedy doesn’t have to define the rest of your story. His perseverance and his peace stand as a beacon for anyone fighting their way back from loss, trauma, or despair.
He reminds others that while pain may be part of life, faith makes restoration possible. “You just have to keep moving forward,” he says, “one mile, one prayer, one act of courage at a time.”
