Who among us has not had their life upended in some way by cancer?  Whether directly or indirectly, cancer has impacted the lives of almost everyone I know, which is why I support the American Cancer Society.

Many of you may be aware of the important work that ACS does to support research for new cancer treatments.  But ACS is also dedicated to supporting patients facing cancer now.  One example of such support is ACS's Road to Recovery program, which provides free rides to patients to and from their treatments.  For many patients, the side effects of treatment may render it difficult for them to get to their appointments on their own.  And many lack the support network and financial resources to arrange for alternate transportation.  Road to Recovery pairs patients with volunteer drivers, relieving many patients of the stress of figuring out how they will make their appointments.  While Road to Recovery operates with volunteer drivers, the program nevertheless has significant costs.  These include: developing and maintaining the app and website platforms that pair patients and drivers; screening patients for eligibility; performing background checks on drivers; and providing excess car insurance coverage. Last year, Road to Recovery provided nearly 90,000 rides to patients.
