The new COVID-19 protocols are as follows;
... Online registration only. No money or forms will be taken at the race site.
... Everyone, including me the RD, must maintain at least 6 ft distance apart.
... Face masks are optional but don't breathe on anyone.
... USA Triathlon Drafting rules will be in effect. 3 bike lengths apart and once you enter the draft zone you must complete your pass. Otherwise you're cheating in more ways than drafting.
... Draft Zone. I could ride my Moto and check like I do at a sanctioned triathlon. I'm not going to do that. This is a FUN event. There comes a point where a person should respect themselves and others.
... Awards. The overall male and female winners may grab their prize from the box.
The 22K (13.7 mile) time trial cycling course is one complete loop of Ga highway 177. The race begins and ends at the Lions Camp for the Blind. The cyclists will line up at the start as they choose. It is suggested slower cyclists start to the back of the line up. Each cyclist will start 1 minute apart. The cyclists will turn around when they reach US 82 and head back on the course to US1. After you turn around at US1 you will return to the finish at the Lions Camp for the Blind. The course is very flat with some rolling but brief hills as you go around the corner of the lake. Although this bicycle race is NOT affiliated with USA Triathlon, the USA Triathlon "passing" rule will be in effect. Once the cyclist is within 3 bike lengths of the overtaken cyclist, they have 15 seconds to complete their pass. There is no drafting allowed. Drafting will result in a 1 minute time penalty added to the violators finish time. Each cyclists finish time will be recorded and published on the Smith MultiSport website. Each athlete will receive a finishers certificate with their finish time. There is a Time Trial tab on the SMS website that has all previous finish times and course records. www.smithmultisport.com
The SmithMultiSport (SMS) Time Trials are to provide a "bicycle" race for age group athletes since there are so few bicycle races available. The time trial format is the safest form of bicycle racing and it is truly the "Race of Truth". It's you against the clock. The registration fee is low as there is "no swag" given at the SMS time trials. No T Shirts, no finisher medals, no trophies. However, there are awards for the top male and female finishers donated by one of the local endurance athletes. A set of bicycle lights and a Tour de Swamp ball cap, until the supply runs out. But no matter where you place, you will be contributing to the Lions Camp for the Blind which is the host venue and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which support the time trials in other ways. The $9 registration fee is divided equally. Also, the top finisher, men and woman, will receive free entry into the next SMS, No Swag, time trial.
