Running Overnight in Cold Temps
Running overnight in cold weather is one of the biggest challenges ultrarunners face—and it’s a core part of the Wolverine State 100 experience. Crossing Michigan’s Lower Peninsula from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, both the 100 Mile and 100K distances take runners through long hours of darkness and chilly fall nights.
In this recorded virtual panel, experienced ultrarunners and coaches, Julie, Dan, and Megan share their best strategies for staying strong, safe, and focused during those overnight miles. You’ll learn how to:
-
Choose the right layers and gear for Michigan’s unpredictable October weather
-
Use drop bags and aid stations to reset when the cold sets in
-
Fuel and hydrate effectively in low temperatures
-
Stay mentally tough through the dark, quiet hours—especially the 4 AM slump
-
Prepare for the unique challenges of the Wolverine State 100 course
Whether you’re racing your first ultra or are a seasoned runner chasing a belt buckle, this session will help you plan, prepare, and push through when it matters most.
